Minor Project:

The production of a short engaging project comprises 100% of the marks allocated to the 12 credit point course Individual Studio Practice (COMM2352).

The Minor Project provides the opportunity to rehearse a complete production cycle from concept to screen as a creative individual by applying animation, interactive and/or real-time principles and production techniques to a resolved self-directed work. Immersion in applied studio practice over a sustained 5 week period provides an experience that refines and deepens your understanding of the nature of the medium and its potential to communicate complex ideas. You are expected to apply the knowledge gained in the Concept Development and Storytelling courses to the production of this creative product in order to demonstrate your ability to harness the elements of image, movement, sound and time within narrative, interactive or experimental structures in ways appropriate to time-based media.

The hands-on production aspect of this project allows you to consolidate the kind of craft skills necessary to realise your own original concept so that its ideas can be communicated to an audience in the most effective manner possible. You will gain a working knowledge of pre-production, production and post-production processes that are required to bring any time-based media project to a successful conclusion while managing and solving various conceptual, artistic and technical problems. This practical knowledge assists in the development of a viable personal working method that will help inform your Major Project during the following semester.

The Minor Project also builds a portfolio of appropriate work which is critical to employment within the Creative Media Industries. You should therefore take pride in your own work and be curious and actively interested in the work of others about you.

Some Practical Advice:
Your Minor Project concept should be based on a realistic assessment of your individual abilities as well as the time frame and the resources available. You may choose any genre / media appropriate to the AIM program and your professional aspirations, providing it harnesses the intrinsic attributes of animation and/or interactivity. Your lecturers will advise you about the scale and feasibility of your project and will consult with you regularly during its development and production phases.

Project Scale:
We are looking for work which appears complete in terms of the realisation of its ideas, form and structure, its visual style, the way sound has been used. Therefore title and credits are to be an integral part of this work. In our experience, students are usually far too ambitious and optimistic when thinking about concepts appropriate to a 5 week production period. Some ideas simply cannot be quashed into 30-40 seconds without severely compromising aspects of the story that the audience would otherwise be engaged with - empathy for characters, for example. In a sense, you need to demonstrate your ability to manage your time so quality rather than quantity is the appropriate way to think about the Minor Project.

Some Possible Outcomes:

A Short Narrative Animation (30-40 seconds) - 3 short acts (beginning, middle and end) with 2 plot points constrained by 1 or 2 characters, one location and the depiction of broad-based events.

An Interactive Work - an intelligently considered piece that involves dynamic visual and aural elements that provide navigation through various visual fields. Its form can be narrative or experimental and it may also harness elements automatically generated and/or orchestrated by the computer. The piece should be sufficiently engaging to sustain user interest for 3-5 minutes.

A Realtime Work - involving navigation through an intriguing 3D space that uses image and sound to evoke atmosphere and to suggest gameplay and the users role within the world. It may also harness elements automatically generated by the computer. The piece should be sufficiently engaging to sustain user interest for 3-5 minutes.

A Character Study (30-40 seconds) - involving a well-considered character design, appropriate vocalisation if applicable, and the depiction of a complex action or emotion via acting and animation craft.

An Experimental Animation (45-60 seconds) - an intelligently considered piece that involves a rigorous, focused and innovative exploration of a particular animation technique. Usually synchronised to a suitable piece of music.

A Motion Graphics Sequence (30-40 seconds) - dynamic time-based imagery that emphasise elegant graphic design and well-considered movement. It should have an overall shape or dramatic arc that let's the audience know the that piece is drawing to a conclusion. Usually synchronised to a suitable piece of music.

A Technical Exploration - usually chosen to help solve technical problems which are predicted to arise during the production of the Major Project. It may be a written document, a 3D computer model, the testing and refinement of a production technique relating to visual style of your Major Production. The technical exploration shall include a written technical report explaining the background, processes and results of your dicoveries. A guide to writing this report can found here.

Minor Project Pitch
9:30 am Monday 18th May

You will pitch your concept supported by pre-production material, to your peer group and staff
. You will need to present all of the following 6 items:

  • one sentence synopsis
  • a Script (linear works), a Treatment (interactive works)
  • storyboard (linear), flowchart and storyboards if applicable (interactive)
  • visual style example - what it will look like - example of look/visual references
  • sound statement - how you will use sound within your piece addressing the use of music, spot effects, atmospherics and dialogue
  • production technique summary - nominate a medium and production process, eg, my project will be a linear, 2D, hand drawn piece. I will create my line drawings on paper and scan them into a computer for digital colouring in Painter.

You are welcome to present any additional materials that you feel would strengthen the communication of your concept.

Reference Resources:
You are strongly encouraged to access AIM’s extensive 30 year archive of past student work as a rich source of inspiration and reference for formulating approaches to a production technique, to find solutions to various production problems and as a means of gauging what sort of projects are of a scale practical within the time constraints and resources available to you. The Internet is also an invaluable tool, particularly for the most current information on the use of software. An additional learning resource can be found in the knowledge and expertise of your class peers.

Assessment Criteria:
Your Minor Project will be evaluated largely on the strength of its concept, how successful or imaginative it was in communicating your ideas to an audience (your directorial ability) and on the level of craft skills and production values you achieved, and how well the elements available to animators and/or interactive media practitioners, underpined and serviced the guiding premise of your work. Pride in your own work should be apparent.

The Individual Studio Practice course guide states that at the conclusion of this course you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to apply theories that harness the attributes of your chosen medium to practical production.
  • Communicate ideas in ways appropriate to the medium both at the pre-production stage and in the final published work.
  • Apply experiential knowledge of specialised production methods pertaining to your chosen project.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, organise and manage a production from concept to screen in a studio environment
  • Apply ways that enhance your original concept that come from the considered and creative use of production solutions.
  • Develop your directorial ability.
