2nd Semester Commences
Monday the 20th July

Review of 1st Semester Minor Projects: Monday 21st of July,
10:00 am

This will be an informal session where your peers and staff will review all first semester work. This is a chance to relate the challenges, triumphs, lessons and pain arising from your production and to think about what you've learned from these experiences and how you might integrate this knowlege into the development and prduction of your Major Projects.

Today we will also elect the Screening Committee who will drive the organisation of the 2009 AIM Graduate Screening throughout Semester 2.

Concept Development Session: Tuesday 21st of July,
10:00 am

This will be an optional, full day session where students can bring bring major project ideas, in whatever form they exist, for discussion with peers and staff.

The following is a brief run down of key second semester dates. Due to the importance of sorting out problems at the pre-production stage we have allocated 20% of marks for this semester to the assessment of your use of pre-production tools and processes to help realise your vision. The remaining 80% of your Major Project marks will be allocated by external assessors who will come to your work fresh. The 20% of your pre-production marks are drawn from five assessment points;

-1 Pitch
-2 Script or Treatment
-3 Storyboard and Flowchart
-4 Animatic or EPOC
-5 Production Plan, Sample and Schedule

Submission requirements for linear and interactive projects vary at some assessment points.

We recommend that in choosing your projects, you work within an area that caught your imagination in first semester. Games projects and collaborative works between two or more students are completely viable within second semester. If you think that your project sits outside of what has traditionally been created at AIM, come and talk to us - we are open to and enthusiastic about new ideas.

1) Major Project Pitch: Monday 27th of July, 10:00 am

As in first semester, you will pitch to staff and peers. We would ask that you stay for the duration of all of the pitches in your group to offer feedback and support.

Your pitch should include:

    1. A verbal presentation of your concept to staff and peers which clearly and effectively comunicates the concept, themes, atmoshpere, tone, visual and audio aspects fo your work. Refer to point 3 for examples of materials that will assist you in effectively communicating all aspects of your Major Project.
    2. A typed story synopsis, outline or concept proposal.
    3. Any additional materials you feel will assist you in communicating your concept to others-additional materials might include a first draft of your script or treatment, rough storyboard or flowchart, reference images, reference film for visual style and editing.


2) Script/Interactive Treatment Submission Deadline: Monday 3rd of August, 10:00am

Please email your script or treatment to (as you did in semester 1). All scripts must be submitted by 10:00am on Monday. Feedback will be returned to your student email address after 5pm Wednesday the 6th of August.

As always, for narrative works, please submit all scripts in AFC format, you will find a template here.

For non-narrative linear works should submit a detailed treatment that lays out the intentions, themes and aesthetic of your work before going on to description or explanation of how the world will unfold over time. You would also explain how the relationship between sound and image would work, as well as communicating the timing and pacing of your work.

Interactive Treatments should include an clear overview of the concept, as well as a detailed description of the user experience. Once you've completed your overview, you should move onto an explanation that lays out the internal logic or rules that underpin the space, a description of mechanics and navigation and through these descriptions, an illustration of how the interactive works. The treatment, written from the perspective of the user, then follows on from overview and explanation, demonstrating how the different elements of the interacive come together to create the user experience.

3) Storyboard, Flowcharts and Sound Statement Presentation: Monday 10th August. 10:00am

Storyboards and flow charts will be reviewed by AIM staff. A booking sheet will be provided for you to reserve a time with staff. Students' work will be reviewed individually. You will be given verbal feedback only at this submission point. It is recommended that you take comprehensive notes during these sessions.

Pleases provide digital copies of your sound statement and storyboard and flowcharts on DVD.

You will present the following:

    1. A working highly detailed storyboard for linear narrative and non-narrative concepts, with notes on action, sound and dialogue. The storyboard should communicate the timing, pacing, atmosphere and tone of your work.

      For interactives, in addition to detailed storyboards describing each level, space or page, please provide storyboards showing how transitions between spaces andlevels work. You will also need to provide a detailed flowchart.

    2. For all works, please provide a statement that explains your conceptual and technical approach to sound design; including voice characterisation, sound effects, atmospherics and soundtrack where applicable.

4) Animatic/EPOC Presentation, Monday the17th August,10:00am

Animatics and EPOCs will be assessed by staff today. A booking sheet will be provided for you to reserve a time with a staff member. Students' work will be reviewed individually. You will be given verbal feedback only at this submission point. It is recommended that you take comprehensive notes during these sessions. Please submit a digital copy of your work at the time of your presentation.

You will be assessed on the following:

Linear Work
A precisely timed animatic. The animatic should include key framing of shots and rough versions of any transitions, to facilitate the accurate timing of your work. If your concept includes dialogue, please provide a rough recording within your animatic. Draft sound effects, music and atmospherics should also be included.

Interactive Work
A detailed EPOC that includes;

  • navigation/site architecture
  • Rough animation that communicates the user experience within each screen/space
  • a code mock up with place holder graphics.
  • rough sound for interface and action

    5) Production Plan, Production Sample, Synposis and Schedule Presentation: Monday 24h August,10:00am

    This submission is the same for both linear and interactive works. Today you'll present a finished production still and a brief, typed summary of your anticipated production process.

    You will also present a detailed electronic production schedule, broken down into days and weeks, that details what tasks you will be undertaking when throughout production and post-production, up to the day of hand in.

    You will also submit a production sample. This will be a piece of finished animation or interative space that has been proved through a production process. For example, in the case of a character animation, the production sample would be a short piece of animation communicating the thoughts or feelings of a character. In the case of a non-narrative piece, this would be a piece of animation that described the transition from one scene or approach to another. In the case of an interactive work, a production sample would be a resolved example of complex aspect of coding working with finished art and sound.

    You will also be required to
    submit a production still and 25 word synopsis. The production still, submitted as a 120x90, 300dpi thumbnail and synposis, will represent your work on the  screening poster. Your work will be reviewed by AIM staff. A booking sheet will be provided for you to reserve a time with staff. You will recieve verbal feedback at the time of your presentation, please ensure that you take detailed notes.


    Progress Reviews:

    Week starting Monday the 24th of September

    Week starting Monady the 19th of October

    These reviews provide an opportunity for staff to keep in touch with the progress of your individual projects. Studens will make a time with with either Chris, Kate or Jeremy during this week to talk about and reveiw your progress.

    Final submission date of Major Projects: Friday 13th November, 5pm

    All projects will be submitted to a Major Projects box outside of the staff office with a signed submission form.

    Screening: Tuesday the 24th of November, 7pm

    Clean up the AIM studio for the screening event. Then frock up, sit back and watch your audiovisual creations with your public

    Clean Up: Wednesday the 25th of November, at an appropriate hour decided by student consensus.

    Come in, clean up, pack up and then, well…… leave.

    RMIT's Academic Calendar 2009


    In second semester, a number of industry visits will be organised for AIM's coursework and research students. These visits will allow you to see inside a number of animation, multimedia, computer games, production and post-production companies, to ask questions of practitioners and establish valuable contacts with key industry figures. These tours will commence in the first week of August and run over 3 or 4 consecutive Wednesdays. We will give you a clearer indication of the tour schedule as dates are confirmed.
