beige on beige

Some donkeys in a back alley in Herat, Western Afghanistan, 1974. This plaster and mud brick wall is the same colour as the earth from which it is made so you can hardly see the corner where the dirt lane way meets the wall. The soft lighting which created this almost shadowless scene was caused by sunlight reflecting off a similarly coloured wall on the other side of the alley leaving the donkeys to almost float in front of their soft beige background.

I can image that donkey in the foreground repeatedly banging his head against the wall. "Oh God, please don't send me out into that heat again..."
