a Buddhist novice

Fed each day by the people, a change of garmet, some books and room enough to sleep - a spartan life left clear for the study of things spiritual.

He knew my language. To my shame, I did not know his.

My traveling companion and I met this novice monk in Bangkok. He was studying English and was keen to practice on tourists. He took us to his monastery right in the heart of busy polluted Bangkok. In fact he lived in a monk's 'cell' inside the base of one of the large stupas which figure so prominently on Bangkok's skyline. The view from the top of 'his' stupa was wonderful. He gave us both a little clay Buddha figure which he said would protect us during our travels. I wore it everywhere and still have it.
