Kandy dancer #1

Elaborate silver
adornments flash bright against dark skins in the twilight of a fading evening. Anklets jingle to the rhythm of their dancing.

While roaming the streets of Kandy, a hill town in central Sri Lanka in 1983, I chanced upon ceremony involving a procession in which a tooth, purported to be that of Buddha's, was carried from a temple on elephant back through the streets of Kandy. Accompanying this grand procession of monks, tasseled umbrellas, bullocks and carts were theworld famous dancers of the region.
