an unusual play of light #1
The fast moving equatorial sun momentarily finds a gap to penetrate between the buildings of a narrow street near a market in Trengganu. Its light slices obliquely down this old wooden wall.
I lingered a short time watching the shadow of the basket grow longer down the wall before my eyes until the old lady and her bananas were engulfed in cooling shade. Had I passed by just five minutes later, I would have missed this extraordinary effect.
The intensity of sunlight in the tropics, particularly during midday, makes for pictures that film has difficulty in recording, resulting in a high-contrast tonal range of solid blacks without detail and burnt out highlights.
