a sculpture of living green
Behind fastidiously manicured mud walls, terraces of soft green step down this valley to the river below. Photographed in the district of Karangasem, East Bali, on the road from Rendang to Amlapura.
The hand of man has modified the Balinese landscape in the most extraordinary way making it possible to grow food in places that would otherwise be impractical to cultivate.
It would be fascinating to watch a time lapse photography sequence of terraces like these taken over a century or two. I should imagine that each one would slowly move back in towards the hill as its walls were shaved with new fields given birth at the base of the hillside. The way the seasons effect the appearance of the land endlessly fascinates me.
