a carpet of living green

Photographed in the district of Karenasem, East Bali, on the road from Amlapura to Singaraja.

A soft shag pile of sprouting rice shoots makes for an organic sculpture of living green. Ever conscious of the role the Hindu gods play in the order of things, a small shrine within the fields provides a place for prayer and to make offerings which will help ensure a bountiful harvest.

I spent some time here sitting by the roadside above this scene watching green waves ripple across this gorgeous shag pile as fingers of wind played amongst the blades of rice. You can see one such wave captured in the top right hand side of this picture where the shiny leaves have yeilded to the breeze and reflect a brighter patch of sky.
