the ruined splendor of Pagan

As far as
the eye could see
the ruined remains
of Buddhist temples
and stupas were
dotted across this dry
landscape all the way
to a blue-hazed horizon.

It was an easy matter to navigate across this vast plain. Find a stupa to climb, survey the land from a height and choose the next ruined temple to visit. Since there were no fences whatsoever in this area, only a natural brush barrier beside little dirt tracks, you could make a bee line straight the site of your choice.
Goats graze freely amongst history shepherded by children. Oh, it became vital to remember the shape of the stupa near which you are staying so that you can find your way home again.
