Aesthetic Values Of Hand Drawn Line In Character Animation
This paper analyses the use of line in hand drawn character animation. Using my own short animated video IG as one of the case studies, I will review how initially rough artwork is manipulated to produce clean, homogeneous lines in a fashion that underscores the dominance of Disney’s aesthetic toward general expectations and readings of character animation. This report will look at the uses of the rough spontaneous line in character design and how the graphical content evokes the potential of the character when practiced in the preparatory stages of traditional methods of cel-based character animation.  I am also particularly interested in how rough, loose, free line qualities can create weight, movement and spontaneity within a character’s performance and overall aesthetic; while looking at how such varied line quality can contain a range of visual sensibilities that appear to survive only in animation produced for adult audiences. Here then, we will discuss other contemporary animators and studios, through such works as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003), Sylvain Chromet’s Triplets of Belleville (2004) and William Kentridge’s Johannnesburg, 2nd Greatest City After Paris (1989); whose ‘non-Disney’ character animation style is revealed - as much as anywhere else - through the subtleties of performance and character expressed through the graphical quality of line-work.
