Visual-Style Variation as a Narrative Device in Animated Productions
The limitless potential of the animated medium has always been agreed upon and exploited to depths from the point of delivering ‘narrative material’ to the extent of expressing ‘emotive content’. This investigation seeks to highlight a particular aspect of the medium’s potential within the spheres of the former - 'the freedom and ability to use multiple visual styles within a single animated narrative’. The aim of this investigation is to collectively study and categorize animated films that have varied visual styles within the space of a narrative and henceforth assess the degree of effect that it has had on its viewers. In pursuit of this aim, a contextual study of visual-styles in animated films was conducted, study of existing form based models of animation theorists were taken into account and a cognitive study was undertaken. All of these coagulated to the formulation of a new model that found animated narratives to have employed multiple visual styles as a ‘stylistic system’ and/or as a ‘device for initiating symbolic impulse’. The result of this study indicates that the use of multiple styles within an animated narrative is most justified and effective when used as a device to entice audience participation.

An Exploration Of Digital Animation As A Tool For The Independent Animator
Computers are used not only to produce 3D animation as well as a means to mimic the visual style of 'traditional' cel animation, but increasingly to reproduce the look of hand made animation, digitally. This paper will trace those attempts and seeks to propose an alternative to real 'direct-under-the-camera' animation techniques using digital production tools via an analysis of the characteristics unique to the traditional paint-on-glass method of animating. This investigation also offers suggestions to the independent animator who might be interested to 'archive' the look of paint on glass animation in ways that retain something of the aesthetic qualities and charm of this technique.

Taking a Byte Out of the Teacher's Apple - an investigation into the effectiveness of animated agents
Over recent times, there has been a growing trend towards utilising animated agents for the task of teaching, guiding and communicating. Tasks typically assigned to humans have been delegated to an array of animated characters within an educational, multimedia world; these characters serve to mediate between the application and the student. The aim of this investigation is to determine whether animated pedagogical agents (APAs) are effective in conveying educational content to the user. In pursuit of this aim, data was obtained from the following sources: a study of previous empirical research into animated agents, responses to questionnaires submitted to practitioners within the educational multimedia field, and the survey results of a number of educational CD-ROM applications. The sources provided empirical and anecdotal evidence towards evaluating the effectiveness of agents. Results concluded that animated agents do assist in conveying educational content to the user by helping to instigate a conducive learning environment, sustain user interest, and convey information in a way that is cognitively effective for the user. Although the results of this study indicate APAs are a powerful educational tool in potentially transforming subjects that were initially perceived as dull and difficult, into those that are fun and understandable; further investigations into variables that may impact on the effectiveness of agents need to be undertaken.

Perspective in Background Panoramas - Simulating camera motion in traditional animation
In creating animation using static two-dimensional artwork it is desirable to produce the illusion of movement in three-dimensional. space. The use of panoramas as a component of such a construction opens the possibility of selectively revealing an illustrated scene in a way that simulates cinematic camera motion through space. The requirement of joining together compositions which are then revealed over time makes the design of panoramas unlike a typical illustration layout. To demystify the design these layouts, we present an analysis of sequences from animated films. We reconstruct background panoramas and camera movements to identify patterns in their design. We draw conclusions the narrative purposes these shots are used for, and suggest some directions for exploration of the use of multiple perspective layouts in animation.

Appeal- how character design and animation go hand in hand to give a character an appealing personality.
In the history of animation there have been many appealing characters. Not all of them were attractive, pleasing or stimulating in the first place, but they all had something which made them interesting and engaging to the audience. If you look at Baloo in “The jungle book” pretty much every child would quote him as one of his favorite characters in the film. He is friendly, very caring and a bit slow. He is a funny character and a good friend to rely on. His personality has no black spots, he is the good guy and a very appealing character. But on the other hand if you look at Hopper in “A bug’s life” he is mean and nasty. He is definitely the bad guy, but his design and personality still has a lot of appeal. So an appealing character doesn’t need to be beautiful, nice, friendly or pleasing in his behavior. He “just” reaches the audience. He engages them and makes them react to him either in a positive or negative way. The characters which are able to engage the audience are the ones which stand out. The ones which are remembered are the ones with personality. A character which is not remembered as a puppet, but as an individual with an identity and a soul.

Animated Science Communication
Science-themed animations have been produced since the origin of the animated medium and yet there appears to be no formal study of these films as a coherent group. This paper is a first step towards characterising this genre. Animated films are selected based on their subject matter and then subject to survey and analysis using methods adapted from television surveys and academic analyses of animation. The results confirm the author’s hypothesis that there is a definable genre of animated science communication and the films in that genre share many features with their live-action counter parts. However, the films also exhibit animation-specific characteristics and additional constraints of form. The domination of lecture-derived formats is of particular interest. Characteristics of both animated and live-action science communication suggest possible directions for future innovation. Specific variations to dominant technique, subject matter and format are proposed.

The Aesthetics Of Debris In Online Media

From its inception in the fine arts canon, with the Dadaists and Cubists in early 20th century, the use of garbage, the thrown-away and/or the found-object has flourished, and has even become a mainstream aesthetic. In locating its precursors and tracing their lineage (and motivations) this paper unveils the impact of this eclectic, poetic and particular realm on the pioneers of online media and parlays the gap into fruitfulness. Beginning with the derivations of Kurt Scwitters' Merz, Marcel Duchamp's "ready-mades", Joseph Cornell's "verbal bibelots", Robert Rauschenberg's "combine paintings", Candy Jernigan's "rejectamenta", through to the varying instances in online media. It is a lineage pertinent to the history of art and largely uncharted.

Big Hit Web-Based Animation Website
Animation is a common feature of many websites nowadays. Rapid growth in Internet technology such as high-speed broadband Internet has allowed Internet users quicker access to website content, which may be packed with visually appealing material such as "web-animation". This can take many forms. For example, the splash screen, advertisement banner, downloadable icons and many more. Within the context of this research paper the specific focus is short narrative web-based animation, however other types of animation will be referenced throughout the paper.Creators of narrative web-based animation need a platform to showcase their work to a wide audience. This platform is normally in the form of an independent animation website which could be a company or personal animation website for a specific cartoon character or a family of cartoon characters owned by one creator, or a larger animation website which receives submissions from many animators. This research will confine itself to independent animation websites or personal animation websites. This paper seeks to investigate whether a set of qualities nominated by the researcher are possessed by independent animation websites in the current web environment, and to discover how important the set of qualities are in influencing the animation website visitors’ surfing experience. The conclusion offers a series of guidelines and suggestions intended to be of assistance to those who are considering setting up their own personal animation website.

Non-Photorealistic Rendering
Animation has taken many levels in sense of techniques, styles and use of medium at our present time. One of the most advanced and popular techniques in animation is the use of computer-generated images (CGI). 3D imagery generated in computers works in virtual three-axis dimensions unlike classical hand drawing on paper (2D) where it each drawing is shot frame by frame with a camera. Over the decades, more and more computer graphic researches have begun exploring techniques that would have an alternative to photorealistic rendering. However photorealism is not always a desirable goal. Sometimes a hand-drawn quality to the image is wanted and this requires a non-photorealistic renderer. Non-photorealistic rendering methods have received very little attention; my research would address this gap.
