Research Paper Abstract (2004):
Redefining the Virtual Battlefield - The Evolution of Multi-Player Tactical First-Person Shooter Games Towards Persistent Online Virtual Battlefields.
This paper explores the development of the Tactical Shooter genre and the parameters that facilitated the evolution of infantry simulation in popular military themed First-Person Shooter games. This will note the Tactical Shooter sub-genre milestones associated with better interpretation of the human body’s simulated faculties in general and their application within a battlefield setting. Points regarding the way computer game simulation of weapons physics and infantry combat modelling are interpreted by the player is also discussed along with how information pertaining to the condition status of the player’s in-game character, or avatar, is communicated. This will ultimately query the balance between gameplay and realism will help identify whether there is a necessity to mimick reality absolutely or allow limits for the sake of entertainment.
