The Meaning and Representation of Melancholy in Film
Melancholy is a powerful emotional entity or state; an affecting phenomenon that holds many similarities to notions of the sublime. It is an overwhelming sensation that causes us to ponder the unknowable. It can leave us feeling insignificant, yet at the same time empower us. It has the ability to cause both pleasure and pain. Melancholy has been an important artistic theme from the Renaissance to the present. This exegesis will examine the definition and representation of melancholy in art, and, in particular, explore the depiction of melancholy in moving image media. A critical literature review will be used to reach conclusions about what melancholy means in an artistic context. A cinematic case study will be reviewed to show, in a formal sense, how melancholy is depicted in film.
