2nd Semester Commences

Submission Requirements for
Major Project (COMM2347)
MCM(AIM) Coursework Students

The following is a brief run down of key second semester dates. Due to the importance of sorting out problems at the pre-production stage we have allocated 20% of marks for this semester to the assessment of your use of pre-production tools and processes to help realise your vision. The remaining 80% of your Major Project marks will be allocated by external assessors who will come to your work fresh. The 20% of your pre-production marks are drawn from four assessment points;

- Pitch
- Script or Treatment
- Storyboard or Flowchart
- Animatic or EPOC

Submissions at assessment points vary for linear and interative works. Refer to the schedule following for futher information on pre-production assessement.

We recommend that in choosing your projects, you work within an area that caught your imagination in first semester. Games projects and collaborative works between two or more students are completely viable within second semester. If you think that your project sits outside of what has traditionally been created at AIM, come and talk to us - we are open to and enthusiastic about new ideas.

Review of 1st Semester Minor Projects: Monday 16th July, 10:00 am

This will be an informal session where your peers and staff will review first semester work. A chance to relate the challenges, triumphs, lessons and pain arising from your production along with whatever else is on your mind. The purpose of the Minor Project is to give you practical experience in all phases of making a time-based work (from concept to realisation) in order to help you better plan your Major Project. An honest reflection and evaluation of areas of weakness, which emerged during this project, are likely to impact again on the smooth and successful completion of your Major Project unless addressed. This will be a day long session.

Concept Development Session: Tuesday 17th of July, 9:30 am

As in first semester, this will be an optional, full day session where you will bring major project ideas, in whatever form they exist, for discussion with your peers.

Major Project Pitch: Monday 23rd July, 9:30 am

As in first semester, you will pitch to staff and peers. You will need to book a into a pitch session. A booking sheet will placed on the notice board outside of the staff room. We would ask that you stay for the duration of all of the pitches in your group to offer feedback and support.

This submission represents 5% of your pre-production marks. You will be assessed on the following:

    1. A verbal presentation of your concept to staff and peers.
    2. A typed story synopsis or concept proposal.
    3. Any additional materials you feel will assist you in communicating your concept to others.

Additional materials might include a first draft of your script or treatment, rough storyboard or flowchart, reference images, reference sound, mime or the provision of freshly baked cup cakes. It’s up to you.

Script/Interactive Treatment Submission Deadline: Monday 30th July, 10:00am

Please submit your script or treatment to the Scriptwriting file on Mr White. These scripts will be collected at 10:00am on Monday and feedback will be returned to you by the morning of 1st of August.

This submission represents 5% of your pre-production marks

Storyboard or Flowchart, Sound Statement and Visual Treatment  Presentation: Monday 6th August

Storyboards, flow charts, screen layouts and production stills will be reviewed by AIM staff. A booking sheet will be provided for your time. Students' work will be reviewed individually.

Pleases submit digital copies of your visual treatment and sound statement to the Mr White . If you have a digital copy of your storyboard, then please submit this also.

This submission represents 5% of your pre-production marks. You will be assessed on the following:

    1. A working storyboard for linear concepts and for interactives, a flow chart and screen layouts. Your storyboard must contain notes on action, sound and dialogue where applicable.

    2. A visual stylistic treatment, including working evidence of a practical production solution-for example, you would take an image through to its finished state in order to assess the practicality of your process within the available production time.

    3. A statement about sound design, including voice characterisation and music where applicable.

Animatic/EPOC, Production Schedule, Still and Synopsis Presentation, Monday 13th August

A booking sheet will be provided for this submission. Staff will spend 20-minute sessions with individual students, reviewing their animatics and EPOCs individually.

Today you will also be required to submit a production still and 25 word synopsis. The production still, submitted as a 120x90, 300dpi thumbnail, will eventually represent your work on the 2007 screening poster.

This submission represents 5% of your pre-production marks. Youwill be assessed on the following:

All Work

A detailed production schedule.
Production still and synopsis.

Linear Work

A precisely timed animatic. The animatic may include some key framing of more complex action to explain events. If your concept includes dialogue, please provide a rough recording within your animatic.

Interactive Work

A detailed EPOC that includes;

  • navigation/site architecture
  • a rough animation that simulates the user or experience within each screen or
  • a rough code mock up with place holder graphics.
  • a rough approximation of sound

These reviews provide an opportunity for staff to keep in touch with the progress of individual projects. As with the EPOC/ANIMATIC reviews, you’ll need to reserve a 20-minute block of time on the booking sheet.

Final submission date of Major Projects: Friday 9th November, 5pm

You will be submitting two versions of your films this year, one for assessment and one for screening-details of which are listed following.

1) For assessment-Quicktime mov. file in DVPAL compression, with sound at 48khz as data on a CLEARLY LABELLED DVD

Where possible, please submit your files on DVD. Where your file is too large to fit onto a DVD, an external hard drive will be provided for you to submit
Major Project files on. A Submission Box will be placed outside of the staff offices with a signing sheet on Friday the 9th of November. You will be emailed a Submission Form in the week beginning the Monday the 5th of November, please fill out this form and submit it with your Major Projec

2) For screening-You will be submitting your film as two files; one Quicktime file containing image and one AIF or WAV file containing sound.

-The image will be submitted as a Quicktime mov. file in Animation compression with a 4x3 aspect ratio. If you wish to keep your widescreen format for screening, you will need to letterbox your file before you export it.
-The sound will will be exported as an AIF or WAV, in 44Khz as stereo.

Screening: November 22nd, 7pm

Clean up the AIM studio for the party of invited family, friends and industry guests. Set up tables for food and drink. Then frock up, sit back and watch your audiovisual creations with your public

Clean Up: Tuesday the 27th of November, at an appropriate hour decided by student consensus.

Come in, clean up, pack up and then, well…….leave

RMIT's Academic Calendar 2007


In second semester, a number of industry visits will be organised for AIM's coursework and research students. These visits will allow you to see inside a number of animation, multimedia, computer games, production and post-production companies, to ask questions of practitioners and establish valuable contacts with key industry figures. These tours will commence in the first week of August and run over 3 or 4 consecutive Tuesdays. Each Tuesday will include visits two or three different locations. We will give you a clearer indication of the tour schedule as dates are confirmed.
