About Us
We have been operating at RMIT for more than 25 years, and we are one of the largest and most active dive clubs around. We have a large dive boat called Shambles and many sets of SCUBA equipment that are ready to be used by members. We even have an in-house instructor that can provide you with quality and affordable SCUBA Diver training. We are also affiliated with local SCUBA Dive Shops and Schools who offer great discounts for RMIT Underwater Club members
Club members can borrow club gear and go diving on Shambles, the club's large dive boat. We try to keep everything low-cost and affordable – we are one of the lowest cost of any dive club in Victoria. We have tanks, regulators and buoyancy vests to borrow. We even have an air compressor so you can get cheap air-fills.
We rely on a »pitch-in and help« attitude, so that we can keep the costs down and maintain a sense of fun and recreation in all our activities. We have a diverse range of members, skills and experience.
Take the opportunity to increase your own experience and abilities by learning from people in the club. You can learn boat handling skills, dive planning, trip organising, underwater photography, and dive safety.
When you dive with us, you can try under-water photography, reef diving, wreck diving, drift diving and even cave diving. We dive regularly out of Sorrento, which gives as access to a vast number of different dive sites in Port Phillip Bay and outside the Heads. There are hundreds of shipwrecks around Victoria, and most are around the Heads area. Usually, a day of diving - usually on Sundays - will include 2, or even 3 dives.
We are a very active and sociable lot and dive nearly every weekend all year round. We run trips to different locations throughout the year, particularly during semester breaks and holidays, and organise regular social events, not only for divers.
Apart from the weekend local diving, the club organises diving adventures at various times of the year. The club's compressor allows us to choose remote diving locations, dived only by those with similar resources (the compressor is also available for weekend diving). Some of the locations that have been visited are Wilson's Promontory, Eden (NSW), Mt. Gambier and the remote Queensland Island (Lady Musgrave) for our most adventurous dive-camping trip so far.
Club Meetings
We meet regularly in in RMIT University function room. All members are invited to attend those meetings as we usually discuss and decide on important matters. In 2007, we also aim to arrange regular talks and presentations during the meetings. More information on our meetings can be found on the club procedures page.
2007 Club Membership Information
The RMIT Underwater club now has two membership costs. If you are an RMIT student it only costs $35.00 to join our club for one year. The costs for other members are $120.00 per year. Please note that this cost includes your insurance while participating in any dive club activity, and the opportunity to participate in heavily discounted PADI courses. As a club member, you will also receive discounts at some dive shops in and around Melbourne.
Sign up during O'Week 2007 and get a free RMIT Underwater Club T-shirt!
You can download a membership form here (PDF). Fill it in and see us at one of our meetings to join up. For more information, you can drop us an email or, even better, come to one of the meetings if you are unsure. If you are already a diver, best bring your scuba license and logbook as well.
