SURF
TRIP - Phillip Island:3-4 July
- Begg/Int/Adv. Surfing Lessons
This is our monthly Advanced / Intermediate surfing lessons
trip. If you can, come down the night before as the instructor would like
to structure the lessons like this:
Meet at the Smiths Beach surf shop early Sunday morning,
go for the lessons/surf. Get back and watch the video tape over lunch time
at the house, then go back and have a surf - hopefully learning from what
you've watched on the video.
Lessons are taught by either Simon McShane (National & State champion) or Greg Hogan (Judge & instructor) and are video taped for later viewing a general bagging as well as huge amounts of laughter by all involved.
Surfing is done on the best breaking beach of the day.
Beginners lessons are also available at Smiths Beach.
If this sounds good, get in touch with Steve Tanti on surfriders@rmit.edu.au or his mobile 0419-379-755.
Epic
Trip! - Byron Bay and Sunshine Coast:
4-15th December
This is our epic end of year trip. Last time we did this
it was a ball! Sitting in the sun all day, lazing by the beach and river
in Byron Bay - the only thing we had to worry about was where to surf next
and when we should eat. Weather in December in Northern New South Wales
is fantastic. 30-40 degrees every day, 20+ degree water, no need for a
wetsuit. You'll wonder why you hadn't moved up there before! (forgetting
the fact that Melbourne's the best city in the world)
Side trips to Bondi Beach, Nimbin, Brisbane, Sydney and any beach with surf that we find along the way.
All the universities in Australia come up to the Sunshine Coast for a weekend of surfing and partying. Competitions are held in all surfing diciplins : Mens & Womens standup, Longboard, Body board and even kneeboard!
Pretty much all Melbourne Uni's went up in '97 - RMIT (voted Most distructive and troublemaking - All 6 of us!), Melbourne (won kneeboard), La Trobe, Monash, Deakin Geelong (won overall), as well as Uni's even from Perth!
We're going up the week before to stay in Byron Bay for
some relaxation and a bit of last minute practice for those that are competing.
You don't have to compete to come up, just enjoy some
hard core partying and sitting on the beach and NOT HAVING TO WEAR A
WETSUIT!!!!!!!
Check out the trips we did in 1997 and 1995!
This year we have quite a number of good surfers in the club, keen to compete so it should be a great trip.
HOW TO GET THERE: We'll be taking the RMIT mini-bus up there. This will take up 8 or 9 people along with a lockable trailer. Others will also drive up.
WHEN: Leave Saturday morning (4th Dec), and drive straight
up through the guts of NSW so we can hit Byron ASAP.
Get to Byron hopefully Sunday night. We'll stay there until Thursday
arvo, where we will drive the couple of hours to the competition site.
WHERE: Both Byron and the Sunshine Coast, we'll be staying in camp grounds to keep the costs as low as possible.
COST: $70-80 Travel (Petrol etc.), approx $6-8/night Accommodation,
$10-15/day in food. + beer and spending money.
If we can get some people organised enough, we may just make it a flat
daily fee and provide most meals (cerial / bacon & eggs for breakfast,
BBQ's / fish&chips / or whatever roadkill we can find for lunch
and dinners).
Rough estimate on total cost: $3-400+ depending on how much you eat
and drink.
Get Saving people!!! It's an awesome trip.
TORQUAY LEARN TO
SURF TRIP: 12 to 14th March
Cost $20 (accom/food) + $20 for two-two
hour lessons.
The Surfriders Annual Learn to Surf Trip. Each
year we teach around 80 people to surf over the weekend. We meet at 5:30pm
at the RMIT branch of the Commonwealth Bank's foyer (Swanston Street, half
a block up from Melbourne Central/Museum) the day after the pub crawl and
get back to Melbourne on Sunday afternoon.
For those wanting lessons, prevision must be
made by paying and signing a form at either Orientation Day, the Pub Crawl
or before we leave to Torquay on Friday. All surfboards and wetsuits are
provided for the duration of the lessons. Due to the huge amount of people
on the trip, those wanting to surf after the lessons will need to hire
boards/wetties at shops in Torquay (we will try to get discounts, but can't
guarantee it).
If you don't want lessons either you know how
to surf or just want to come for the party, well, just come along!
Pictures from previous Torquay trips can be found off the main page in that particular year's Trip Pictures.
We stay at the lovely Torquay Public Reserves, opposite the Torquay Pub and shops. Shopping centre with supermarket etc. is 15mins walk and the beach is 5 minutes walk through the camping ground. Surfing shops are 20mins walk up the main road with Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Billabong, Gash... blahh blahh blahh. all up there as well as factory seconds shops.
